Join BCCPA's Lunch and Learn to explore the topic of "Anticipatory Grief in Long Term Care", presented by the team from Maylis Health.

About the webinar:

Admissions to a Long-Term Care (LTC) home can be emotionally complex for residents, their families, and staff. While grief is often associated with loss after death, many individuals experience it much earlier—this is known as anticipatory grief.

In LTC, where residents often live with multiple chronic conditions and progressive illnesses such as dementia, anticipatory grief plays a significant role in shaping care experiences. With the Office of the Seniors Advocate projecting that by 2035 one in four British Columbians will be over the age of 65—and dementia among the top causes of death—understanding and responding to anticipatory grief is increasingly vital.

This webinar explores how LTC homes can identify and support anticipatory grief among residents, family caregivers, and staff, fostering environments grounded in empathy and understanding.

Learning Objectives:

  • Recognize the common signs and expressions of anticipatory grief.
  • Understand its broad impact on residents, family caregivers, and LTC staff.
  • Explore how anticipatory grief influences admission and care planning.
  • Gain practical strategies to support individuals and families coping with anticipatory grief in the LTC setting.
