DIRECTOR of CARE - Fair Haven Homes Society - Burnaby

Fair Haven Homes Society is a non-profit organization, founded 75 years ago to provide low-cost housing for seniors. Today, Fair Haven provides long term care and affordable housing to more than 500 seniors in Burnaby and Vancouver. We are recognized as a leader in providing homes that nurture community and quality of life for seniors.

We are currently recruiting for an experienced Director of Care for our Burnaby Lodge.  Reporting to the CEO, and as a member of the Leadership Team, this position provides leadership and supervision to the RNs, LPNs, and Care Staff in gerontological nursing theory and techniques, and acts as a member of the multi- disciplinary team.

The Director of Care plans, coordinates, implements and evaluates residents’ clinical nursing care. Responsibilities include providing clinical learning opportunities, participating in research activities, and promoting high standards of care.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Assists in the development, implementation and evaluation of departmental and facility Philosophy/Mission Statement, goals and objectives, policies and procedures.
  2. Develops, implements, conducts and evaluates annual in-service and continuing education programs for the Resident Care Department. Ensures the programs are made available to staff on a planned basis and are designed to meet identified learning needs. Ensures the programs are attended by designated staff, followed up and evaluated according to their effectiveness.
  3. Assists in the development, implementation and evaluation of short- and long- term objectives, standards, policies and procedures, programs and activities within the resident care department.
  4. Participates in facility-wide CQI and MSI program.
  5. Attends regular monthly meetings with the Chief Executive Officer to review and discuss objectives, issues and activities related to resident care.
  6. Ensures residents’ right to fair and equitable treatment, individuality, privacy, confidentiality, property and civil rights are well established and maintained.
  7. Provides leadership to the nursing staff in the development of resident- focused care plans.
  8. Schedules and leads annual care conference for each resident and arranges special care conferences as necessary.
  9. Participates in admission planning activities and communicates with external partners as needed.
  10. Responsible for hiring and performance evaluation of RNs, LPNs, and Care Aides.
  11. Participates in staff disciplinary action up to and including termination.
  12. Responsible for the evaluation and recommendations of new products and equipment according to established systems.
  13. Plans and implements clinical programs, protocols and clinical practice guidelines.
  14. Plans and implements clinical programs for Special Care Unit (Burnaby site).
  15. Orients new care staff.
  16. Identifies care team learning needs and conducts appropriate educational sessions.
  17. Provides direct nursing care as needed e.g. assessments, wound care, special protocols.
  1. Plans, coordinates and/or implements research activities within the facility.
  2. Acts as the infection control nurse for the facility.
  3. Develops and maintains documentation systems to ensure accurate health records are maintained.
  4. Communicates and shares information on residents with physicians, other departments and external agencies as appropriate for care planning.
  5. Assists with staffing and payroll functions.
  6. Ensures departmental operations comply with all required Health & Safety Standards and Regulations.
  7. Ensures appropriate follow up for residential care incidents in the absence of the Chief Executive Officer; may be required to manage unusual situations or emergencies.
  8. Contributes and maintains a safe environment for residents and/or tenants, families and staff.

Qualifications:

Education/Training and Experience:

  • Graduate of an approved school of nursing
  • Current practicing registration with BCCNP
  • Baccalaureate degree in nursing
  • A minimum 2 years’ recent clinical experience in gerontology
  • Progressive responsibilities as a Nurse Supervisor or Manager preferred

Skills & Abilities:

  • Demonstrate knowledge base and current clinical skills applicable to gerontological nursing.
  • Ability to coach and provide clinical supervision.
  • Ability to identify learning needs and develop educational programs.
  • Ability to provide and/or develop resource materials including educational materials.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of adult education principles.

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
