Enhancing dementia care: The impact of dementia training programs in long-term care

High-quality dementia care in long-term care requires innovative, evidence-based approaches that address the complex needs of both residents and staff. Dementia training programs equip frontline caregivers with practical tools to deliver person-centered care. By understanding the whole person, identifying root causes of responsive behaviors, and developing collaborative care strategies, person-centred dementia training improves resident quality of life, reduces caregiver stress and strengthens team dynamics. Standardized dementia training programs for frontline care providers has demonstrated positive outcomes, including reductions in the use of potentially inappropriate antipsychotics in some care homes.

In this 60-minute webinar, participants will explore an innovative framework for dementia care and how it fosters a shared knowledge base, language and approach to dementia care that supports quality improvement initiatives. Using slides and engaging group discussion, the session will:

• Demonstrate the connection between person-centered care practices and improved outcomes for residents and staff.

• Provide actionable strategies for applying the framework in care settings.

• Share information on how to access government-funded dementia training for frontline staff in long-term care homes in B.C.

Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of how dementia training can support quality improvement in their care homes, and actionable ideas to bring back to their teams, ensuring they are well-equipped to enhance the care and well-being of residents living with dementia.
